Looking for a family camping spot within easy driving distance of Brisbane? From 19 to 21 September 2026, our family spent two nights at Moogerah Lakeside Bush Retreat, booked through Hipcamp. The drive from Brisbane took approximately 1.5 hours.
We went with two other families, bringing the total to three families and 10 kids ranging from Year 5 to Year 9. The host allocated us a large shared camping area, giving the adults space to relax together while the kids enjoyed being outdoors.
In this review, I’ll share our actual camping costs, the facilities we used, our kayaking experience on Lake Moogerah, and the main drawback to consider before booking.
1. Booking and Camping Costs
Our family of four paid $116 for two nights on a non-powered site. The other two families each booked a powered site for two adults and four children at $228 for two nights.
Here is a breakdown of the costs and facilities based on our stay.
| Detail | Our experience |
|---|---|
| Campground | Moogerah Lakeside Bush Retreat |
| Booking platform | Hipcamp |
| Stay | 19–21 September 2026, 2 nights |
| Drive from Brisbane | Approximately 1.5 hours |
| Group | 3 families, 10 children |
| Non-powered site | $116 for 2 nights |
| Powered site | $228 for 2 nights |
| Firewood | $20 per pack |
| Hot showers | Free during our stay |
For a two-night family getaway, we thought $116 was good value, particularly with free hot showers available during our visit.
Camping together as a group
Although we booked our sites separately, the host allocated all three families a large shared area. There was enough room for our tents, vehicles and gazebos, which made the weekend much easier to organise.
If you are planning a group trip through Hipcamp, I recommend contacting the host before arrival. Explain how many families are coming, whether you need powered sites, and how much space your tents and gazebos will require.
Our group allocation worked well, but it is worth confirming arrangements in advance rather than assuming adjacent sites or a shared area will always be available.
2. September Weather: Warm Days and Cool Nights
During our September visit, the days were warm and the nights cooled down enough for us to sleep comfortably.
We enjoyed being outdoors without dealing with the intense heat we often associate with a Queensland summer. The conditions were also pleasant for spending time around the lake and relaxing at the campsite.
Of course, weather can change from one weekend to another. If you are planning a spring camping trip, check the forecast before leaving and pack layers for cooler evenings.
3. Kayaking on Lake Moogerah — and an Unexpected Dip

One of the highlights of our trip was kayaking on Lake Moogerah. The lake was approximately a five-minute walk from our camping area, making it convenient to head down to the water without packing everything into the car.
We all wore life jackets, and we were glad we did because one of us ended up falling into the water.
Two things stood out during our experience.
The water became deep more quickly than we expected. Even when we were relatively close to the shore, the depth was greater than we had anticipated.
The shoreline had a soft, muddy bottom. When stepping into the water, our feet sank into the mud, making getting in and out less straightforward than expected.
If you plan to kayak with children, make sure everyone wears a properly fitted life jacket and follows local boating and water-safety guidance. Check the conditions before launching, supervise children closely, and take care when entering or leaving the water. The depth and condition of the lakebed can vary, so do not assume the shoreline is shallow or firm.
Old shoes that can get wet, plus a towel and a change of clothes, are useful items to bring down to the water.
For our group, kayaking was one of the most memorable parts of the weekend, even with the unexpected swim.
4. Campground Facilities: Hot Showers, Kitchen and Campfires
The facilities we used made our two-night stay convenient.
- Hot showers: The showers were free during our visit, which was particularly useful after spending time around the lake.
- Camp kitchen: A shared sink area made washing dishes easier after outdoor meals.
- Laundry: Washing machines were available, although we did not need them for a two-night stay.
- Campfires: Campfires were permitted during our visit, and firewood was available to purchase for $20 per pack.
The campfire was a highlight in the evening. Once the temperature dropped, sitting around the fire and chatting with friends was a relaxing way to finish the day.
We also brought our food and supplies from home, so we did not need to drive out to local shops during the weekend.
Facilities, fire restrictions and firewood availability can change with conditions and property rules, so check the current listing and any instructions from the host before your trip.
5. Kangaroos Around the Campsite
Another memorable part of our stay was seeing wild kangaroos moving around the campsite in the evening. The kids loved spotting them, and it added to the feeling of being away from the city.
We also did not encounter any bush turkeys raiding our food during this visit. Anyone who has camped at busy Queensland sites may know how persistent these birds can sometimes be around food.
Wildlife activity varies, however, and you should never rely on animals staying away. Keep food securely stored, dispose of rubbish properly and avoid feeding wildlife.
6. Our Gazebo Setup: Mesh and Solid Walls

When camping with three families, having a comfortable shared outdoor area makes a big difference. We set up our gazebo with a combination of mesh walls and solid walls, creating a space for eating, relaxing and chatting.
The mesh walls allowed airflow while helping keep some insects out during the warmer part of the day. The solid walls provided extra shade and helped reduce exposure to the breeze when the temperature dropped.
Having both types of walls gave us flexibility as conditions changed throughout the day.
One important consideration is wind. Solid gazebo walls can catch the wind and put additional stress on the frame, so secure the gazebo properly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If strong winds or severe weather are forecast, take the walls down or pack the gazebo away when necessary.
For family camping, a gazebo can be a useful addition because it creates a shared space beyond the tent, especially when several families are camping together.
7. The Main Drawback: Toilet Facilities
The main drawback we noticed was the toilet block.
There was one toilet block serving the camping area, and we sometimes had to wait during the busy morning period.
It was manageable during our two-night stay, but it is worth considering if you are travelling with younger children or visiting during a busy weekend.
If bathroom access is a priority for your family, check the current facilities listed by the host and consider how many campers may be sharing them.
Final Verdict: Would We Go Again?
We enjoyed our two-night stay at Moogerah Lakeside Bush Retreat. For our family of four, the $116 non-powered site offered a reasonably priced weekend away, and the large shared area worked particularly well for our group of three families.
Our highlights were:
- A $116 campsite for our family of four for two nights
- A large shared area for tents, cars and gazebos
- A short walk to Lake Moogerah
- Kayaking and time outdoors with friends
- Free hot showers during our stay
- Kangaroos appearing around the campsite in the evening
- Comfortable spring weather during our visit
The main downside was having to wait for the toilet facilities during busy mornings.
If you are looking for a family or group camping getaway around 1.5 hours from Brisbane, Moogerah Lakeside Bush Retreat is worth considering. Contact the host before booking if you want to camp together as a group, confirm the facilities and powered-site arrangements, and prepare for a muddy shoreline if you plan to spend time on the lake.
As with any camping trip, check the current listing, weather and property rules before you leave.
This review reflects our family’s personal experience during a two-night stay in September. Prices, facilities, site allocation and conditions may change, so check the current Hipcamp listing and confirm details with the host before booking.
