Introduction
Located high in Queensland’s Gold Coast Hinterland within Lamington National Park, O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat is one of our favourite destinations for a family mountain getaway.
We had visited the area on day trips before, including stops at the nearby vineyard and alpaca farm, and had explored the idea of camping in the region. This time, we decided to enjoy a more comfortable winter escape with a three-day, two-night stay in a two-bedroom Valley View Villa, costing around AUD $1,300 for our stay.
The private balcony jacuzzi overlooking the valley, heated swimming pool, and ranger-led activities for children made the trip feel very different from our usual camping adventures.
If you’re planning a family holiday in the Gold Coast Hinterland, here’s what we experienced, along with practical tips to help you plan your own visit.
1. The Drive to O’Reilly’s: A Canungra Pit Stop
Stop for coffee and a snack in Canungra
Before heading up the mountain, we stopped at The Outpost Cafe in Canungra for hot coffee and pies. It was a convenient break before continuing along the winding mountain road.
Canungra is also a good place to plan a stop at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards. The property offers a relaxed countryside setting, food and drinks, and access to the nearby Mountview Alpaca Farm.
Families can enjoy seeing the alpacas, while adults can explore the vineyard. Check the official vineyard website for current opening hours and alpaca experiences before visiting.
Prepare for winding mountain roads
The drive from Canungra to O’Reilly’s takes around 40 minutes, depending on traffic and conditions. The road has plenty of bends, so allow enough time and avoid rushing.
On one of our previous day trips, our children experienced motion sickness on the drive. If your kids are prone to car sickness, a few simple precautions may help:
- Drive smoothly and allow extra time for the journey.
- Keep the car comfortably ventilated.
- Bring water, light snacks, and anything your family normally uses to manage motion sickness.
- Consider taking a break before starting the climb if anyone feels unwell.
The mountain scenery is part of the experience, but the winding road is worth preparing for, particularly when travelling with younger children.

2. Our Two-Bedroom Valley View Villa Experience
For this trip, we chose a two-bedroom Valley View Villa instead of camping. Having our own space, a kitchen, and a private outdoor area made it easier to relax without needing to leave the property for every meal or activity.
A private balcony jacuzzi in winter
One of the highlights was the outdoor jacuzzi on our private balcony, overlooking the mountain valley.
We visited during winter, so being able to enjoy warm water while breathing in the cool mountain air was particularly relaxing. The children loved spending time in the jacuzzi, and the valley view made the experience feel special.
For our family, this was one of the biggest differences between staying in a villa and going camping. Instead of setting up equipment and managing the usual camping routines, we could simply slow down and enjoy our surroundings.
If a private jacuzzi is important to you, check the exact accommodation type and inclusions when booking, as facilities can vary between room and villa categories.
Cooking our own meals
We made use of the villa kitchen and prepared our meals rather than dining out for every meal.
Self-catering was convenient for a family trip because we could eat when it suited the children and spend more time relaxing at the villa. It also gave us more flexibility than planning every meal around restaurant opening hours.
If you plan to do the same, consider bringing groceries or buying supplies before heading up the mountain. Check the available kitchen equipment and facilities with the retreat before you travel.

Swimming with a rainforest backdrop
Despite the winter visit, the daytime sunshine made swimming an enjoyable option for the kids.
The retreat’s heated infinity pool, with its mountain and rainforest surroundings, offered another way to relax between activities. For us, the combination of the pool, private jacuzzi, and peaceful setting meant there was no need to fill every hour with sightseeing.
Pool temperatures and operating arrangements can change, so confirm the current facilities and conditions with the retreat when booking.
3. Kids’ Activities and Rainforest Experiences
One of the reasons O’Reilly’s works well for families is that children can experience nature through organised activities rather than simply accompanying adults on walks.
The Eco Rangers program
Our children participated in a two-hour, ranger-led bush-tracking activity, exploring the rainforest environment and learning about the surrounding flora and fauna.
It gave them an opportunity to engage with nature independently while taking part in a guided experience. For parents, it was also a welcome change from planning every activity ourselves.
O’Reilly’s currently promotes its Eco Rangers program for children aged 5–12, with sessions and availability varying by season. Check the official kids’ activities page for current details.
My tip: Check the program schedule before booking your accommodation and reserve popular activities in advance when possible. Don’t assume that every activity runs daily or that discounted rates are always available.
Guided walks and other activities
There are several ways to explore the rainforest around the retreat. Depending on the current program, options may include guided walks, wildlife encounters, the Tree Top Walk, and other nature-based experiences.
You don’t need to book an activity for every part of your stay. If your family enjoys walking, you can also explore suitable walking tracks at your own pace, following current park information and track conditions.
For a broader overview of the retreat’s experiences, visit the official O’Reilly’s activities page.
Glow worms and the Flying Fox
For families looking for something different, O’Reilly’s also offers experiences such as guided glow-worm tours and the Flying Fox Adventure.
These are options to consider when planning your itinerary, rather than activities we necessarily completed during this stay. Check current age requirements, prices, session times, and availability directly with the retreat before making plans.
The Glow Worm Experience is a guided evening tour, while the Flying Fox offers a more adventurous rainforest experience.

4. An Evening Walk to the Campground
After preparing dinner in our villa, we took a gentle walk of around 10–15 minutes to the nearby O’Reilly’s Campground.
The campground offered a different atmosphere from the villa. Gathering around the communal fire pit beneath the night sky was a lovely way to finish the day, and the surrounding mountain scenery was especially peaceful as daylight faded.
It was also a reminder that you don’t have to choose between a comfortable accommodation stay and enjoying the simple pleasures of camping. We could enjoy the warmth and convenience of the villa while still spending part of the evening around a campfire.
If you’d like to visit the campground during your stay, check access arrangements and any fire restrictions in place at the time. Fire use is subject to local rules and conditions.
5. Practical Tips for a Family Stay
Here are the main things I’d consider before booking a similar trip.
1. Budget for accommodation and activities separately.
Our two-night Valley View Villa stay cost around AUD $1,300. Treat this as our actual trip cost, not a guaranteed current rate. Accommodation prices vary with dates, availability, and room type. Add any paid activities, meals, and travel expenses when planning your budget.
2. Bring warm clothing.
The mountain can be cooler than the coast, especially in winter and after sunset. Pack jackets, comfortable walking shoes, and extra layers for the children.
3. Plan meals before driving up the mountain.
We enjoyed preparing our own meals in the villa. If you prefer self-catering, plan your groceries and check the kitchen facilities before departure.
4. Prepare for the winding road.
Allow enough time for the drive from Canungra and plan for children who may experience motion sickness.
5. Check activity schedules before arrival.
Ranger programs and other experiences may have limited places or seasonal schedules. Check the official website and book ahead where appropriate.
6. Leave time to relax.
The private jacuzzi, swimming pool, and mountain views were a big part of what made this trip enjoyable. You don’t need to book activities from morning until night to make the most of the retreat.
Conclusion
Our three-day, two-night stay at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat was a memorable family getaway in Queensland’s Gold Coast Hinterland.
The Valley View Villa gave us room to unwind, the private balcony jacuzzi was a winter highlight, and the children’s ranger-led activity added an educational element to the trip. We also enjoyed the simple experience of preparing our own meals and walking over to the campground in the evening.
For families who enjoy nature but want a break from camping, O’Reilly’s offers a useful balance of comfort, rainforest surroundings, and outdoor activities.
My biggest recommendation is to plan the winding drive, check activity availability in advance, and leave enough time to enjoy the accommodation itself.
